A Monument by Daniel Pickles & Steve Hockett

Ever wondered what 60 kilograms of melted marshmallows stuck to the outside of a 3 metre tall monument in a derelict office space in Manchester would look like? Come one, come all and behold the marvellous ‘Intangible Bibelobis’ built by our studio bro Steve Hockett and his cohort Daniel Pickles. This project is funded by the Cornerhouse Micro Commissions program.

Opening tomorrow night at 6pm.

Piccadilly Place, Manchester, M1 3BN

Old But Good

I haven’t checked in on Kris’s portfolio in years. He took part in our Two Faced project many moons ago, and I’m loving his work just as much as I did then! Talented fella.

How much is that paper doggy in the window?

In 2008, British design studio Lazerian embarked on a collaborative paper sculpture project entitled Gerald. Having designed a 3-D dog made from paper, flat packs were sent out to 101 (get it?) artists to create their very own bespoke ‘Gerald’. Artists and designers include Supermundane, Pete Fowler, Kai & Sunny, our good selves here at DR.ME and many more. All of the paper is sourced a stones throw from where I grew up in the Lake District at James Cropper which is a wonderful (if bizarre) coincidence. Gerald (alongside a limited edition book) will be launched in New York on the 17th May at New York Design Week.

Just Heard

Secret 7’’ combines music and art for a good cause.

“What we do is take seven tracks from seven of the best-known bands and artists around. We press each of those tracks 100 times to vinyl then get creatives from around the world to interpret artwork in their own style for of one of the 7 tracks; resulting in a one-of-a-kind sleeve for every single one. We exhibit these for a week, then on Record Store Day (April 20) you can get your hands on one, or more, for £40 apiece. You won’t know who created the sleeve, or even which song it’s for until you have parted with your cash – the secret lies within.”

The opening took place last Thursday where I got to see in the flesh the vast variety of sleeves created in aid of  charity Art Against Knives. This coming Saturday you can head down to Mother London in the Biscuit Building on Redchurch St to go and bag yourself a beauty all in  aid of a great cause. To view the full selection of sleeve available you can check them out at the Secret 7 site.

Just Seen

At the weekend I wondered into the local Magma to have a mooch and scoped the new publication by the good folk at It’s Nice That. At only £4 and with some potentially interesting content it was an easy decision. Now, I must confess to being a rather hopeless reader  (I was leant a really great Bukowski book a month or so ago and still have not finished it) but, within a day of picking up ‘Printed Pages’ I had read and thoroughly enjoyed all of the articles, especially Liv Siddall’s interview with the maker of the new Bill Callahan documentary (Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film – which is amazing by the way) and also the insight into Sagmeister & Walsh‘s studio. My only criticism if I was pressed would be that the production values (although still beautifully designed) weren’t quite up to previous INT publications but, as long as the content hasn’t suffered (which is certainly hasn’t)  and at £4 as opposed to some slightly overpriced art & design periodicals, who can argue?
